Possible User Tip: Xobni and Twitter
I think the Twitter extension in the latest version of Xobni is another great addition. For example, let’s say you need to mail or call one of your contacts (who uses Twitter). You can search for the contact name in Xobni to get their phone number or schedule time with them. At the same time, you can see information about them from LinkedIn and recent Facebook and Twitter updates, all from the Xobni sidebar. You might find they tweeted from vacation in Hawaii so you know to wait on that mail or NOT call them on their cell phone while they’re on the beach!
Maybe in the future, it would be interesting if a new option was added in Xobni to view all recent tweets from people you follow (or even all tweets from people Xobni finds from your Outlook data). Then again, this might be best left to the Twitter home page.
This evening, I started playing around with Xobni’s Twitter extension some and thought I might share an idea for other users out there. This tip is one way I found to see Twitter updates from all the people/entities I follow in Twitter directly from Outlook with Xobni.
1) I created contact categories in Outlook called “Twitter” and “Twitter Only”. I only added “Twitter Only” so I could exclude those contacts from syncing with my Blackberry.
2) I added contacts for each of the usernames I follow in Twitter that I don’t have mails from (for example, Xobni’s Twitter account). I found that I had to enter an email address for these contacts for Xobni to include them and show them on the sidebar. I just used their Twitter name @ fake.com for this fake address.
3) For any people I already had in my Outlook contacts which are on Twitter, I added “Twitter” to the contact’s category field.
Now in Outlook, I can go to my contact list, use the Outlook search and search (filter) for “Twitter” (which will include my “Twitter Only” contacts), and click on each of these contacts to see their tweets in the Xobni sidebar.
I’m not sure how many people will find this interesting but it’s just a tip I wanted to share for anyone else that might like this.
