When opening mail archived by Symantec Enterprise Vault, Outlook/Xobni crashes.
I recently upgraded my Xobni version to 1.8. When I search for messages and try to open a relatively older email directly through Xobni (which has already been archived by our Symantec Enterprise Vault), Xobni causes outlook to crash. No problems opening more recent emails.
This did not happen in the older version I had - 1.7. Any ideas?

Ok folks, I have a special test build for you to check out. This build is ONLY for people who have the issue with Enterprise Vault crashing Outlook!! If you do not have this problem, DO NOT install this build.
You can download the build here. Please report any issues in this thread, so that I can accurately track issues that come from this build.
The build itself is a test version of the currently shipping release, with a potential fix for Enterprise Vault included. If the problem is solved for you, please let me know so that we can work on including it in an upcoming release.
Thanks!

Inappropriate? That's interesting that the behavior has changed between V1.7 and V1.8. We're aware that there are issues with Xobni and Symantec Enterprise Vault, this is noted in our FAQ. We don't currently have a workaround for this problem.
For now, we are recommending that Xobni users should not use Enterprise Vault, or any other disk encryption software.
That said, I'll file a bug about how the behavior has changed between V1.7 and V1.8. My suggestion would be to file a ticket with our Support Team, and reference this GetSatisfaction posting. They'll want an Inspector X file, taken immediately after Outlook crashed.
Thanks!

Outlook 2003 with Xobni version 1.8 is crashing on me too when I try to open a Symantec Vault archived email so I went back to version 1.7.3.7053. -
Inappropriate?Very strangely - I don't know what I did - opening up archived emails suddenly works now. Don't know it's just spotty and will go away again.
If the problem persists, is there somewhere i can download the older 1.7 version?
And just for clarity - I don't think of Symantec Enterprise Vault as "disk encryption software" - or do you think the behavior of archiving software is the same? (I don't think it is) -
Inappropriate?I'm experiencing the same problem and would like to roll back to a previous version of Xobni. Before I ran into this issue, I had 1.8 installed and had activated the free trial of Plus. Now, when I install an older version, it seems to always revert to 1.8 w/the Plus trial activated.
In order to rollback to an older version, do I need to wipe out my current installation of Xobni *including* the data files, configuration settings, etc ... ?
Thanks,
Tom

Inappropriate? Also having the same problem after I updated to v1.8; never had the same problem in previous version. Please solve this problem as Xobni rocks!
-
I agree. I can't use Xobni now as it crashes almost everytime I use it with Outlook 2003. Versions prior to 1.8 worked fine. And I paid to upgrade to Plus! -
Jordan – Are you also using Enterprise Vault and having the same problem covered by this forum post OR are you just having general crashes?
If you use Enterprise Vault, I would suggest installing the TEST build for this problem that Tyler mentioned further down: http://www.xobni.com/download/8648
If you don’t use Enterprise Vault and have crashes, I would suggest trying the things mentioned on the post below (including scanpst/ost, disabling other third party plug-ins, checking for antivirus compatibility problems, etc...):
http://community.xobni.com/xobni/topi... -
Inappropriate? If you're having issues with Symantec Enterprise Vault and V1.8, please send an Inspector X file taken immediately after the crash to the Support Team. Please put "Symantec Enterprise Vault Issue" in the subject line, and reference this thread. We are actively working to solve the problem, but we need some help from people experiencing the problem.
Thanks!
I’m hoping to get some files!

Inappropriate?Hi
I have just installed 1.8 into outlook 2007 with enterprise vault already in place and I have no issues. I also have Checkpoint disk encryption running if this has any impact (which I hope it doesn't)
I’m working so far
-
I spoke too soon justs had to disable Xobni to keep outlook alive, issue was related to opening archived items. Where should I send the inspector data to ? -
Inappropriate?Read Tyler's response a couple of notes up - he outlines the process.

Inappropriate?Hey Tyler,
I tried cleansing my OST file with scanost and scanpst - no dice, Outlook still crashes when Xobni is enabled and I try to retrieve an email that Enterprise Vault has archived.
I also sent in an Inspector X report, last week, to your support folks, following a crash.
Have you guys made any headway on problem resolution? I'd love to upgrade to Xobni Plus, I just can't see myself doing it if my mail client is going to keep on dying.
Thanks,
Tom

Inappropriate?Same here. It crashes every time, very easy to reproduce. I sent in my InspectorX file too.

Inappropriate?Enterprise Vault (EV) from Symantec is NOT disk encryption software.
EV is email archiving software.
It works by installing an Outlook addin called valkyrie.dll and a number of Organisational or personal forms that provide the message icons to indicate the message class of the archived messages.
EV copies an IPM.Note message to its archive and optionally replaces it with a shortcut of class IPM.Note.EnterpriseVaultArchived.
The valkyrie.dll plug-in intercepts messages of this class and affects the way it is displayed and the behaviour of Outlook when it tries to open such a message. Instead of retrieving a standard IPM.Note message from the Exchange server or the local OST, IPM.Note.EnterpriseVaultArchived messages are retrieved through valkyrie.dll via its own RPC/HTTP call to the Enterprise Vault server (which is not the Exchange server).
I am not an Outlook expert, but I suspect the crash could be caused the way Outlook chains add-ins when processing messages. Maybe Xobni or EV are changing what each other expects to see in the Outlook API and there is no exception handling for this scenario, and therefore causing an Outlook crash.
I have EV7.5SP4 outlook add-in and Xobni 1.8. My experince with this is sporadic. Sometimes I get a good day's worth of work without Outlook crashing, sometimes it crashes on every EV archived message I open. Sometimes it crashes when I open the EV message, sometimes when I close it.
I’m frustrated. Yep!

Inappropriate? As a technologist, this explanation sounds like an excellent hypothesis - Tyler, is this something that your folks will be looking into?
Thanks,
Tom -
Inappropriate? Please find a solution, i use xobni in a professional environment, disabling enterprise vault is not an option!
Cheers,
e.

-
Inappropriate? This is true. Once your e-mail is archived, you MUST have it installed or you cannot access your archived e-mails. Uninstalling is not an option. I saw the one responder said it sometimes worked for him, but not for me. My team had to uninstall which is too bad as it looked to be a good fit for us since the Microsoft offering is so bad.
-
Inappropriate?Any update on this one, Build 8175 still crasing on regular basis - disabled till next release.
I am very sorry that I've upgraded to version 1.8.
Excelent product though!
I’m very frustrated
-
Inappropriate?i've fixed this by turning off "AutoSuggest email addresses in the To, cc, and Bcc fields" under the xobni options.
I’m happy

Hey Tyler, I noticed this post: http://community.xobni.com/xobni/topi... deals with Enterprise Vault issues as well. I thought about adding a link your comment above on that post but I wasn't 100% sure if this other issue was the same or if you wanted some of the people on this post to try it out before mentioning it elsewhere. Just wanted to mention it to you. -
Working for me. Thanks very much. -
Has solved my crashes with Outlook 2003... thanx! -
Inappropriate?Hi ,
When trying to open a Enterprise vault email outlook 2007 crashed.
after uninstalling Xobni - it works fine.
I guess Xobni crashed when the link to the email cannot be found....

Inappropriate? When instead of opening the archived message you "forward" it, the message opens without crashing. Strange! It seemed to work every time.

Inappropriate?I just upgrade to your newest version. I am on Version 1.8.3 (Build 8733) I am a Symantece Enterprise Vault User. The Issue i am having is when i go to archive item and double click Outlook Shuts Down hard. After troubleshooting what i have found is that if i turn off xobni the problem is fixed. I do this by going to tools, trust center, add-ins and then uncheck the xobni box and exit and works great. If you are aware of this issue and have a fix please contact me mspeich@datalink.com

Inappropriate? Thanks again to everyone here who helped us find the problem. I hope that Xobni is continuing to work well for you.
Xobni needs your help. We are looking into how we can index (or make searchable) the messages that are stored in the Vault.
I'd like to ask you a few questions about this -- can you tell me how you search emails that are in the vault today? Does Outlook's regular search find them? Do these messages take more time to load than others?
Any other thoughts in this area you might have will be very helpful.
Thank you! -
Inappropriate?Josh, there is no integration in Outlook to access archived messages. The placeholder/shortcut is a weblink. In order to search you must go to a website on the EV server. In order to index them, you will need to retrieve every message. While the retrieval of archived items is fairly fast, milliseconds, retrieving an entire mailbox is going to be time consuming and resource intensive. I would see if there is some way you could integrate into the existing indexes stored on the EV server. They use AltaVista indexes and it is pretty fast.
-
Thanks Tim. Sounds like there is a big opportunity to save you some time here. -
Inappropriate?Enterprise Vault provides two kinds of search on the content of archived emails:
- Server-based using the EV search web page or the Outlook plug-in's Search Vault feature
- If you are using Outlook and the EV fat client, you can search client-based by using the EV Windows Desktop Search plug-in. This plug-in adds EV as an alternate search location under Windows Desktop Search
- EV stores offine vaults (or vault caches) locally on a user's PC. IF you can access the vaults, maybe you can index htem like indexing a PST.
- You can find the directory where EV stores its vault by looking at: HKCU\Software\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\OVRootDirectory
