I find that Outlook underperforms when your pst file gets large - and archiving is not that useful because keeping the archive pst file open gives an overhead too.
I have just discovered that you can open an old pst file, synchronise xobni, and close the file.
You can then use xobni to search & preview the old emails, and you can then open the mail from within xobni if you need to!
So it really is worth archiving email now.
PS it is sometimes quicker to use Export than Archive to create a pst file, and then delete the messages once you have safely exported them.
