View Full Version : Degraded performance during receive

I, and several of my colleagues, have noticed that there is a pretty significant performance hit (sometimes causing KB input to completely cease for short periods) while receiving new messages. This seems to be most noticeable on very large mailboxes.
– I’m assuming that is because Xobni is indexing those new messages in real time at the time they arrive? Is there a way to do that (indexing new messages) only during periods of computer inactivity (or at least while not trying to type in Outlook)?
Thanks,
Mike

I'm seeing the same thing, as is another Xobni user at my company. It's sort of annoying when you're in the middle typing a message, a background receive happens, and everything just hangs for 4 to 6 seconds as you're trying to type. I'd love to see Xobni able to delay indexing until Outlook has been idle for a few seconds.
Glad its not just me - I was beginning to think that I'd killed this brand new laptop with all the "extras" I've added. Not good when its a corporate machine .. :D

Ditto, generally slower performance all around here. I am in cached exchange mode.

I see a similar issue. After a while, it's like typing on slow modem. Character echo takes a long time. The problem seems to get worse the longer Outlook is open. Closing Outlook and re-opening seems to aleviate the problem for a short time.
I'm on a VPN connection most of the time. It's pretty fast, but perhaps that contributes to the issue.

@ all:
Just to reiterate something that I think I've mentioned in other threads, right now performance improvements are our #1 goal for the next release! All of engineering is basically focused on solving the numerous issues that people are having with Outlook performance when Insight is installed.
So, I know it's a bit of a PITA, but try to hang in there. I wish I had a good workaround for this issue, but we all have to wait it out a bit longer.
From all of us at Xobni HQ, we appreciate your patience while we work on this!

Thanks for the update -- is there any public information about when the next beta is scheduled? I.e., weeks vs. months?

@ ajkessel:
I don't want to get too firm with any specific dates, but we're hoping it will only be a few more weeks. Around the beginning of May if all goes well, if not sooner.
Believe me, we're very concerned with the pain people are feeling from the slow performance, so it's our #1 task at the moment.

Is there a way to "turn off" Xobni rather than uninstalling it so that users having performance issues can wait until the next release to use it? The work on the performance issues is much appreciated.

tyler hopefully you are still on the track for May - I had the exact same problems people are seeing here and just couldnt keep the app installed. Outlook 2007 Cached Exchange Mode for me.

@ Droovie:
If you're running Outlook 2007, you can disable us in the COM Add-in's page. Go to Tools menu -> 'Trust Center' -> 'Add-In's'. At the bottom, set 'Manage' to the COM Add-in's selection, and hit 'Go'. You should be able to deselect Xobni from there.
Unfortunately, if you're running Outlook 2003, this option does not work.

Hey folks,
The engineering team believes it has found the culprit - the next version should definitely speed up while you're receiving emails. Thanks for letting us know and helping to find the cause!

Tyler, Thanks for the detailed and effective response!
We just released an update today with some major performance fixes, specifically a fix for slow Outlook while receiving mail. I would suggest checking to see if you're updated to build 3197 and trying Xobni again.

Is there a way to upgrade without uninstalling? Do we lose our saved data when we upgrade?

I figured it out using Xobni Updater. So I'm running today's build and it definitely seems better at first glance. Outlook is using 135M RAM shortly after running -- we'll have to see if it goes up.
Is there any sort of changelog/update notes publicly available?
We post the notes for this release on the forum, in the Announcements section:
