View Full Version : Outlook Hanging on Shutdown

Hi, everyone,

After installing Xobni a few weeks ago, it seems now that when I shut down Outlook 2007 (running on WinXP Pro Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop with ClearContext 4 installed), the software appears to shut down. But most often a Microsoft error message pops up and says Outlook has in effect crashed and do I want to send an error report and restart Outlook.

Outlook works fine with Xobni and ClearContext installed; it's only when I shut down Outlook that the issue occurs.

It may of course just be my configuration since I haven't read of others having the same experience, and Xobni may not even be at fault. But it was the last application I installed before the shutdown problems with Outlook began.

Thanks for any help or insight!

Cheerily,

Dan

My Outlook.exe also doesn't shut down when I close Outlook. By that I mean Outlook.exe is still a running process in the task manager after I close Outlook. Then when I attempt to open Outlook a new Outlook.exe shows up. If I manually close Outlook.exe then Outlook fires up just fine...

I've had a very similar issue with Outlook2K7 - it closes but the next time I open it I get a message that it wasn't closed properly so it must check the file for corruption. It runs through checking the file for a few minutes and eventually opens.

My experience exactly!

What sucks is that this is such a widespread error that the exact culprit can be very hard to nail down. I've seen Outlook users have the exact same issue with absolutely no 3rd party add-ins installed.
Just google "A data file did not close properly" (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22a+data+file+did+not+close+properly%22&) and you'll see how widespread this is under TONS of different configurations.

I've the same problem as the others. After closing Outlook, Outlook.exe is still running and the Outlook icon stays in the tray. It's really annoying because sometimes it checks my pst-file because i didn't "close" Outlook right.
I also tried to look for the source of all the trouble and because i've no other add-ins, plug-ins or toolbars in my outlook i even uninstalled Xobni and everything was working fine again. So i think it really has to do something with Xobni.
What appears strange to me is, that in the beginning i didn't have these problems. Shuting down was just working fine.
I don't know, but maybe the last update changed something here?

I've a problem after installing Xobni (v1.2.3.build 2645)... outlook 2003 never shuts down properly. If I logout or shutdown, it hangs an winxp reports that an application has not responded etc etc. I have no choice but to force the process to close, however it often leads to the dreaded "not closed properly" pst file check on the next outlook startup.

... At least for me :)

After reading IShootBrides post I went started looking at the other Outlook 2007 Add-ins that I have installed. See these instructions I found:

------
Disable/Enable Add-ins in Outlook 2007:

1. In Outlook 2007, go to Tools > Trust Center
2. Click on the Add-ins section
3. You will now see all active, non-active, and disabled add-ins. Click on the add-in you want to enable/disable and then click on the Go button towards the bottom.
4. This will then open up the COM add-ins page. You can then check/uncheck the add-ins you want to enable or disable.

Pasted from <http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1959/outlook_2007_disabling_enabling_add_ins>

------

Turns out for me I use Microsoft's BCM(Business Contact Manager) When I disabled it Outlook.exe closes just fine.

I take back the ONLY bad thing I've ever said about Xobni!

Happy Troubleshooting!

LOL! Glad you found the reason on your PC.
Like I said, you can't rule out Xobni but there are SO many things that can interfere with Outlook shutdown.. even Outlook itself

SOLUTION (Short-Term): Disable the Xobni Sidebar from the Xobni menu before shutting down Outlook.

I have been seeing this problem since the 1.0.x releases and have been trying to assist the support team on this. I have been told that the issue has been pinpointed and the next major release (due out in mid-February) should address the problem.

If you are experiencing the problem, please look for anything starting with Xobni and ending with log, such as xobni.log, xobni1.log, and xobni.old.log in these locations:
(Vista) C:Users[Your Name]AppDataLocalXobni[Outlook Profile Name]

(XP) C:Documents and Settings[Your Name]Local SettingsApplication DataXobni[Outlook Profile Name]

Send the debug information to Xobni support to help them have more datapoints to check against.

i ran into similar problems installing xobni with planplus and clearcontext installed. clearcontext support sent me to this page http://blog.clearcontext.com/2006/12/video_outlook_p.html with similar suggestions to ishootbrides, but also with a video that was help to me.

after doing that not only did my problems go away but my outlook was working faster than before.

Hi ahpatel (and others)

This is definitely an issue we've been investigating. It's a really tough problem to nail down exactly, as it could possibly be Xobni, it could be other apps you didn't know had Outlook plugins (iTunes, Google Desktop, etc), and could also be related to normal Outlook shutdown issues.

We should have a release out mid-February that fixes this issue for the Xobni-related cases. Keep checking the forums for news of this release.

Hi, everyone,

I've appreciated the spirited conversation and abundant help many of you have given.

I used scanpst.exe on my Outlook data file and it found (and corrected) errors. I then archived the oldest emails and compacted my file (which is now around 800MB).

Then I decided not to close Outlook when it was time to shut down. I closed all other programs then went to Start > Shutdown and let the process take its course. It SEEMS as if Outlook shut down faster than before (maybe because of all my work on the data file!) and I haven't encounter the error message. When I start up Outlook after booting up everything is fine.

Thanks again for all your help. Our various configurations are so different, it's hard to nail down any "one" issue that is causing all of our difficulties. Maybe there is no one issue; certain combinations of corrupt data files or add-ins may produce error messages or cause Outlook to hang on closing and it may take some time to figure out what the problem is. As some have said, Outlook itself may be one of the problems!

Thanks again for your help, everyone! :)

Dan

Awesome to hear that some thorough maintenance of your mail data got you sorted!!

That is so true! Especially since there is now such a plethora of software that has Outlook integration.... from Skype to Google Desktop.

Keeps the IT guys busy and me something to b*tch about :D

For me the new update (build 2804) fixed the outlook problem...

Thanks Xobni-Team !!
