Hello all,

here is my feedback to Xobni, which I also wrote at hexus.net. There are some glitches, but maybe there's a solution out there?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all,

a few days ago I asked Parmman for an invitation to Xobni. This was the only way to get a copy, because Xobni itself doesn't give any away even if you have signed up for a try. Anyway, here are my points.

I've been using X1 for nearly two years now. So I expected to see something that is similar concerning the search capabilities. And Xobni is not. Missing a FAQ document, it is not possible to search for an email that is "from: john" and contains words like "foo AND bar". In my opinion, this is a basic search term. Imagine, that you must add a signature in each and every email with information about your company and its CEO(s) (German law). How do you want to find the message of your CEO - but his name is in every email you sent?

Another problem I encountered is that Xobni finds emails (e.g. "8 emails") but none are displayed - the field is empty. Sometimes it says, "1 email" but checking my folders I see that at least 2 should be found. This is quite strange.

Concerning some technical things I'd ask for a sign which public folders have been indexed. You never see what Xobni has already indexed and what is still missing. I have some log messages about folders that cannot be accessed - but I don't know which. Additionally, Xobni should allow to change the path to its index files. Putting everything in user's home is not always the preferred way.

As a long time Gmail user I am still missing a "real" conversation view. It's quite nice to see all emails concerning one subject, but often I want to see all emails from one contact in a conversation view.

What I am missing, too, is that Xobni does not always show all telephone numbers of my contacts. I don't know if Xobni only uses emails for this information - but there are more numbers in signature not only one. Xobni should check my personal contacts folder too.

Sometimes it would be helpful to change the order or appearance of the windows. I don't need "people connected with ..." very often. I more often need to see the emails.

Anyway - Xobni is a very nice tool. I have never experienced any slowdown during my work. Outlook 2k3 needs long for starting up, but this doesn't matter. I uses 6 MB RAM for about 2,500 emails; this is quite impressive. I am sure that Xobni will improve and address some or all of the things I mentioned above. I only hope that all my emails will be found - currently I am not always sure if it really does.

Thanks for reading.
NK

I am going to address the first portion of this post.

Xobni is currently sending out invitations to all people who have signed up for a beta. This is a big list and we are trying to get through it.

If you feel you should have received you invitation by now, we apologize. It's possible that there was a mistake or that your invitation was caught in your SPAM agent.

For all those waiting, let me assure you we are sending out new invitations from our list every day.
